- Embark on a scenicdrive to Cherrapunjee, also known as Sohra.
- Historically recognized as one of the wettest places on Earth, Cherrapunjee holds the record for the highest annual rainfall, receiving over 26,000 mm in a year between 1860 and 1861.
- En route, we can go for a cave adventure. We'll proceed to the Garden of Caves, a serene and enchanting location where you can immerse yourself in the tranquility and beauty of nature. This garden is a hidden gem, featuring a series of smaller caves, waterfalls, and pools that create a serene and picturesque environment. It’s a perfect place to relax and soak in the natural surroundings.
- On arrival in Cherrapunjee, we shall explore theold Cherra or Sohrarim, which was the original Cherra village. With the coming of the British, who set up their headquarters further south, the village came to be known as 'Sohra' or present-day Cherrapunjee. It was here that the British realized the enormity and intensity of the rainfall and set up a meteorological office for measuring the rain.
- Sohra was declared by the British to be the capital of Assam in 1832, which was later shifted to Shillong in 1866 due to the inclement weather. Sohra is also significant for being the first British outpost in this part of the country.
- A commemorative monument has been erected in Saitsohpen, Sohra in remembrance of David Scott, Agent to the Governor General, North East Frontier of Bengal and Commissioner of Revenue and Circuit in the districts of Assam, who expired on 20th August 1931. A glowing tribute eulogized by the British Raj reads, "By his demise the government has been deprived of a most zealous, able and intelligent servant, whose loss it deeply laments, while his name will long be held in grateful remembrance and veneration by the native population, to whom he was justly endeared by his impartial dispensation of justice."
- We will visit Nohkalikai Falls, one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world. Plunging from an astounding height of 1115 feet, Nohkalikai Falls is nestled amidst lush, evergreen rainforests. This majestic waterfall is renowned for being the world's fourth-tallest plunge waterfall, offering a dramatic display of nature’s splendor. The sight of the water thundering down into the deep pool below, surrounded by verdant greenery, is truly awe-inspiring.
- Finally, we will explore the Arwah Cave, another captivating cave system known for its impressive limestone formations and fossils. What Our Customers Say
I had a great week in Rajasthan- visiting Jaipur, Agra, and Ranthambore in a few days. Everything was planned perfectly - the driver was top-notch, the guides were very knowledgeable and experienced, and the customer service from the office was always helpful and reactive. Safari was an exceptional bonus with sightings of tigers, bears, and even a leopard! Thank you, Vikas, for helping me before, throughout, and after my trip!
